Huddersfield Giants R.L.F.C.
The Giants forward was facing the axe after punching team-mate James Tedesco in a post-match booze-up.
Wakeman, 27, thought Tedesco was trying to chat up his girlfriend in the pub in Cairns and let fly.
His attack on the full-back then sparked a melee involving several other squad members.
But Tedesco later pleaded with Italian bosses to keep Wakeman in the squad for the tournament.
He said: “It wouldn’t have been right if we had gotten rid of him.
“It was just a miscommunication between myself and him, there were a few drinks and it quickly escalated.

“It’s sad it happened. The next morning we met, shook hands and apologised.
“It wouldn’t have been right if we had gotten rid of him. It took a bit of courage from both of us to admit we were wrong – it takes a bigger man not to hold a grudge.”
Both players were fined 10,000 Aussie dollars for the bust-up. Wakeman has vowed not to drink for the remainder of the tournament.
Italy lost their opening game to Ireland and face USA in Townsville on Sunday in their next group game.
