At least 11 die in cold weather in Nepal

At least 11 people have died from cold weather in Nepal as a severe cold wave hit the southern region bordering India, officials say.

The deaths were reported in two districts in the southern plains, and most of the victims were elderly and children.

“Seven people have died due to cold wave in this district,” said Dhruba Kumar Shrestha, deputy superintendent of police at Saptari district.

Police have distributed firewood for people in over 100 places along the roads in the district, he said.

“We have already distributed more than 7000 blankets to people affected by (the) cold wave,” he said, adding that the government and donors were sending mattresses and warm clothes to help people cope with the chill.

Mohan Krishna Sapkota, a home ministry spokesman, said the bitter cold claimed lives of four people in Rautahat district.

Dense fog has hung low over vast swathes of the southern plains in the past week, with weather officials predicting the cold conditions to persist over the next few days.
