Fuel tanker drivers in Birgunj resort to strike after ‘police attack’ on colleague

Tanker driver Santosh Prasad, injured in an alleged attack by police, with his colleagues, in Birgunj, on Monday, April 16, 2018.

Birgunj, April 16

Drivers of tankers ferrying petroleum products to Nepal from India via Raxaul-Birgunj border point say they will stop work unless some police personnel who reportedly attacked a driver will be punished.

The drivers are refusing to transport fuel from Raxaul and Barauni depots from Monday morning.

They have accused the chief of local Inarwa Police Post Binod Mallik and personnel under him of misbehaving with and beating up a driver, Santosh Prasain. They say the police organisation should take a departmental action against them and the government shoulder the responsibility of Prasain’s treatment.

Prasain says he was shouted at and beaten up by police without a reason yesterday.

Spokesperson of the Parsa District Police Office, DSP Rajan Limbu, however, says it was a minor dispute ensured after the driver blocked the road during the peak hour.
