Nepal Federal And Provincial Elections: Voting For Second Phase on Dec 7

Kathmandu, Dec 6: Voting for the second phase Federal Parliament and Provincial Elections 2074 (Nepalese calendar year) in Nepal will be held on Thursday, December 7. Voting will take place in 45 districts. The first phase voting was held in 32 districts on November 26. Counting of votes will begin as soon as voting ends for the second phase on December 7.

The Nepal Election Commission has said that the counting of votes will be fast-tracked and is expected to be completed in eight days. On Thursday, the counting of first phase vote will begin shortly after voting for second phase ends. The counting of votes of the second phase will begin after ballot boxes arrive at the respective district headquarters.

Security has been tightened across Nepal amid volatile situation during polls. Nepal has closed its border with India for 72 hours at more than 22 different entry points for the second round. “Those carrying Nepali citizenship and identity cards are only allowed to enter Nepal,” police officer Tanka Bhattarai, of Kakadbhitta of eastern Nepal, said.
“The border is open for those traveling to India,” Bhattarai added.

The Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and National Investigation Department have been deployed at the polling booth sites to maintain calm during the elections. The elections are being seen as the final step in Nepal’s transition to a federal democracy following a decade-long civil war till 2006 that claimed more than 16,000 lives.

The Nepal Election Commission has said that four teams have been formed to count the votes, with each time comprising of seven members. The members of the team will work round the clock in three shifts, each shift being 8-hour long. The poll panel says that 3,000 votes are expected to be counted in one shift.

The contest in Nepal is between the CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist Centre and Nepali Congress.
