A meeting of CPN-UML provincial parliamentary party, in Surkhet, Province 6, on Monday, January 22, 2018.
Kathmandu, January 22
Provincial assembly members elected from the CPN-UML in Province 6 have said they are not ready to leave the Provincial Chief Minister’s position to the CPN-Maoist Centre.
The provincial lawmakers held a meeting of their parliamentary party committee today to decide that the party should claim the top position in the provincial government as the number of its lawmakers in the assembly is half of the total strength, meaning it can form the government on its own.
As the two communist parties are negotiating for power sharing in key positions with a long-term aim of merger, the Maoist Centre has been claiming the chief minister’s position in two provinces, preferably in provinces 6 and 7 as it has stronger presence there than in other parts.
However, today’s decision of UML members is likely to create a dispute between the parties.
